Chapter Seven

Cold winds whipped down from the mountains, howling over the trees while gray clouds rolled overhead, bringing the threat of an early snowstorm. The full moon would be cresting in less than forty-eight hours, and they still had no idea what to do about their unwelcome visitor in the woods.

It had been weeks since anyone in the pack had shifted, and Rion worried they wouldn’t be able to control it come the full moon. In any case, they needed to find somewhere else to run until the situation had been resolved.

“Where are you going?” Moon asked before Rion could open the sliding glass door to the back deck.

“To see Lorcan in the greenhouses. His mates are with him, so I just hope to hell they’re all dressed.”

Moon snickered as he bounced across the room to take Rion’s hand. “C’mon, big guy, I’ll protect you.”

Laughing along with his lover, Rion opened the door and led Moon outside where he was immediately assaulted by the stench of cigarette smoke and whiskey. “Fuck, Killian, do you have to do that? Didn’t anyone ever tell you drinking and smoking are bad for your health?”

“What’s it going to do?” Killian drawled. “Kill me?” He took one last drag from his cigarette and tossed it into a silver pail near this feet. Then he drained the last of the whiskey, straight from the bottle no less, and stomped across the deck. “Fuck off, Cruz.”

Moon watched him disappear into the house with a pinched expression. “What happened to him?”

“Your guess is as good as mine. He’s only been part of the pack for about three years now. Killian doesn’t talk to anyone, and as far as I know, he doesn’t have any friends. Lorcan trusts him, though, and he takes direction without too much argument, so that’s enough for me.” Rion had often wondered where Killian had blown in from, but really, it wasn’t any of his business. “Just try to avoid him as much as possible. That’s what the rest of us do.”

“No one talks to him?”

“Baby, it’s not like we haven’t tried. Trust me, he wants to be left alone.”

Moon nodded, but he didn’t look pacified as he stared at the empty whiskey bottle Killian had left on the deck. “Yeah, if you say so.”

“C’mon, let’s find Lorcan.” Taking Moon’s hand, Rion led him down the steps and across the back yard to the barn where the winter greenhouse was located. “Uh, hold on.” He pulled Moon back when he reached for the door handle and lifted his own fist to knock.

Lorcan chuckled from somewhere inside and called for them to enter. “No one’s naked,” he said by way of greeting when Rion and Moon walked into the greenhouse. “Jet and Pax went down to visit with Craze and his mates.”

“The healer?” Moon asked, though he sounded a little distracted as he studied the vibrant flowers that bloomed inside the greenhouse. “Wow, it’s beautiful in here.”

While everyone in town knew Lorcan owned the local flower shop, only the pack knew he grew his own flowers.
